BOE: LCD panel production capacity will not be surplus in the next few years

Mainland China's LCD panel industry is advancing, and it is rewriting its e-information industry's "lack of core and less screen". A few days ago, the reporter was informed that at present, there are 21 panel production lines built and under construction in mainland China, with a total investment of about 200 billion yuan and an annual production capacity of 50 million square meters.

Li Dongsheng, chairman of TCL Group, told reporters that Huaxing Optoelectronics is planning the possibility of building a second production line. BOE has thrown up a fundraising plan of up to 46 billion yuan for its multiple production lines in Hefei, Ordos and Chongqing.

From the Beijing Five Generations line of BOE in 2003, China's domestic LCD panels have just passed through 10 years.

Ouyang Zhongcan, an academician of the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that in the competition of "three countries and four places" (Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China) in the past 10 years, the local flat panel display industry technology has continued to improve, and the cost has been declining, gradually alleviating. "No screen pain."

According to statistics from relevant market consultancies, China's panel market share reached 9.9% in the global market last year, marking Japan for the first time, becoming the third largest flat panel display production area after South Korea and Taiwan. It is expected to account for 2014 market share. The rate is expected to reach 18.6%.

The self-sufficiency rate of domestic LCD TV panels exceeded 30%. Guo Yizheng, deputy director of product development at Huaxing Optoelectronics R&D Center, revealed that in 2011, the proportion of TV panels sold by China's six major home appliances brands to overseas was still as high as 96%. By the first half of 2013, the proportion of overseas purchases of the six major power plants had dropped to 69%.

LCD panel local support in the color TV, mobile phones, notebooks and other downstream terminal industry in the past almost completely rely on the history of imported screens, but also BOE, TCL Group and other investments in LCD panels. In the first half of this year, BOE's net profit reached 860 million yuan; Huaxing Optoelectronics' net profit was 890 million yuan, contributing about 83% of the profits to the entire TCL Group.

Just as China’s LCD panel industry is struggling, “outdated theory” and “excessive theory” have sounded from time to time. In fact, when BOE announced plans to raise 46 billion yuan for its multiple production lines at the end of July, it once caused controversy.

"In the next few years, the production capacity of LCD panels will not be excessive." Zhang Yu, vice president of BOE, told reporters that according to BOE's measurement of global panel supply and demand, there is still a gap in the supply of LCD panels. "Of course, in a certain period of time, TVs and notebooks. Panels for different purposes such as mobile phones may have structural imbalances between supply and demand."

In addition, the LCD panel production line that has been built or under construction in mainland China is mainly TFT-LCD technology, and Samsung and LGD have announced that they will shift their investment to AMOLED from 2009.

In this "outdated theory", BOE Chairman Wang Dongsheng believes that the technical correlation and resource sharing between TFT-LCD and AMOLED is as high as 70%. The basis of these two technologies is semiconductor, and the latter is only an extension of the former. And development, "a variety of semiconductor display technology will certainly coexist for a long time."

Zhang Yu said that the current yield of AMOLED production lines is very low, resulting in high costs, especially in the large size field. Among the seven production lines that BOE has built and under construction, only one 5.5-generation production line in Ordos uses AMOLED technology.

Wang Dongsheng quoted data as saying that the annual market total of global display products was 123.1 billion US dollars in 2012, and estimated to be 194.5 billion US dollars in 2020, with an average annual compound growth rate of 5.9%. Among them, TFT-LCD is still the mainstream.
