The article highlights the historical strength and enduring charm of the "Xi'an City Wall," which has been brought to life through AR technology. In 2018, the city hosted a special event called the "Xi'an City Wall New Year Lantern Festival with AR," allowing people from anywhere to experience the lantern festival while walking around the ancient wall. The experience is easy to access—just scan the QR code on your ticket and download the “AR Tourlights App.†Once you have it, you can enjoy the AR lanterns anytime, anywhere, using your smartphone. As you walk, you'll be surprised by interactive elements, meet virtual warriors, take photos, and share them with friends, making the experience both fun and memorable.
In addition to the AR experience, there were also 500 drone light shows in Xi’an. The Qujiang City Light Show featured high-tech displays, interactive arcade games covering over 200 square meters, and various multimedia devices that truly amazed visitors. These events not only celebrated the cultural heritage of the city but also showcased the power of modern technology in bringing tradition to life.
Today, we had the opportunity to speak with Jia Qi, one of the early pioneers in AR and VR in the Northwest region. He shared his insights on the entrepreneurial environment in Xi’an and how the city has evolved over the years. His journey reflects the challenges and opportunities faced by tech entrepreneurs in China.

ARC: Hello, Mr. Jia, I heard that Michael introduced you early on. Both of you are among the first entrepreneurs in Xi’an who got involved with AR technology. You also have a deep background in animation. Could you share your career journey so far?
It’s amazing how things work out. We may not have met before, but now we’re connected. I’m very grateful to Michael for introducing us, and even more so for the support from the VR/AR capital climax in recent years. What remains is real passion and dedication.
I studied computer engineering and animation design abroad. I returned to China in 2009 and worked in new media design and project management. I participated in several animation films both domestically and internationally. In 2011, I was selected as an "Overseas Introduced Talent" under the 5211 Project in Xi’an. In 2012, I founded Blue Shore Electronic Technology and entered the AR/VR industry. In 2015, I was named one of the top Shaanxi industry innovation figures. In January 2018, I received the 10th Shaanxi Youth Entrepreneurship Award and the Outstanding Young Entrepreneurship Award. Currently, Xi’an Lanan Electronic Technology is preparing for listing on the New Third Board and collaborates with Gaoxin District Gazang Valley and Northwestern Polytechnical University's Intelligent Research Center.
ARC: With the VR restoration site in court and this year’s AR Lantern Festival in Xi’an, what do you think about these projects? Do you see a growing demand for AR/VR technology this year?
I think it's like spring breeze blooming everywhere. It's really good!
In China, new technologies often take time to gain traction, just like the Internet or blockchain. Although some capitals have passed, the power of capital helps promote VR/AR awareness. I believe in the future of VR/AR, especially in exhibitions, education, and training sectors.
I don’t think there will be a huge hype this year because AI and blockchain are ahead. But companies that stick to AR/VR will grow and benefit this year.
ARC: How do you view the entrepreneurial environment in Xi’an? From your experience, you must have seen many changes in the past five years.
The entrepreneurial environment in Xi’an has been changing quietly, depending on whether you keep going.
Over the past five years, my team and I have learned to persist and understand what entrepreneurship really means. I was lucky enough to be part of the "Spring River Plumbing Duck Prophet." The environment is getting better, and the city is developing rapidly. Many well-known Chinese enterprises have started to focus on Xi’an recently. Before the Spring Festival, our company representatives attended a meeting hosted by the Xi’an Municipal Party Committee for the Xi’an Entrepreneur Youth Organization.
Xi’an has become a central city in the country, and it's changing every day. Time and place are all recognized by our entrepreneurs.
ARC: From 2011 to now, has your business been stable, or have you made many adjustments? Can you talk about 1-2 key business strategies that you consider most important?
Right now, we're still alive and profitable in 2017.
I want to say that post-80s startups in China are in the best of times and the worst of times. Along the way, I've felt a lot of emotions. I often see successful stories of Chinese internet companies sharing their growth. It's true that "every happy story is similar, but unhappy ones are different." So, the beautiful stories always carry their own struggles.
In 2011, we started with no resources, just passion and technology. It was hard at the beginning. Our main focus hasn't changed—interactive design—but we’ve gone through outsourcing and product development. Because of business needs, we started applying VR/AR early, such as Nintendo’s 3DS with AR features and being one of the first local developers in VR.
