A few days ago, the "Intelligent Medical Assistant" robot from HKUST News officially started its practice in Heyang District, Hefei. It is now assisting general practitioners at the grassroots level with daily diagnostic and treatment tasks. This marks a significant step forward in integrating artificial intelligence into real-world healthcare settings.
The AI-powered assistant was developed jointly by HKUST and Tsinghua University. It can quickly generate electronic medical records based on conversations between doctors and patients, and provide preliminary diagnoses. After the doctor reviews the AI's suggestions, they can access the patient’s medical history through the system, search for similar cases, clinical guidelines, and recommended treatments—enhancing efficiency and accuracy in patient care.
HKUST officials explained that the system uses intelligent voice technology to automatically create medical records during doctor-patient interactions. It also extracts relevant medical information from these conversations, reducing administrative burdens on healthcare professionals.
Through advanced cognitive intelligence technologies, the "Intelligent Physician Assistant" has been trained on vast amounts of medical data, including textbooks, clinical guidelines, and case studies. This enables it to support doctors in differential diagnosis, ultimately improving the quality of care and treatment success rates.
Additionally, for chronic disease patients and other high-risk groups, the system automatically follows up according to family doctors’ schedules. It helps track patient progress, manage health records, and improve data collection across various medical fields.
According to Yibang Power Network, the "Intelligent Medical Assistant" made headlines last year when it scored over 96 points in the National Practitioner Qualification Examination, becoming the first AI robot to pass the national licensing exam for doctors.
This achievement highlights HKUST's progress in two key areas: knowledge acquisition and application. The system uses a "multi-semantic deep learning" algorithm to extract medical concepts, relationships, and knowledge from textbooks, clinical guidelines, and case studies. It also employs "key point semantic reasoning," "contextual semantic reasoning," and "evidence chain of evidence" algorithms, enabling multi-level reasoning capabilities.
Hsu Xiaofei, deputy general manager of HKUST’s medical division, described the AI model as one that integrates voice-to-text communication, machine learning, and medical image processing. This allows the system to assist doctors in making informed decisions during patient consultations.
This model is already being applied through the company’s "Intelligent Assistant."
HKUST has rapidly expanded its presence in the medical field. In June 2016, it partnered with Anhui Provincial Hospital to establish the "Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine." This collaboration leveraged HKUST’s technological innovations and the hospital’s medical resources for joint research.
A year later, they co-founded the Anhui Provincial Smart Hospital. It now connects with the Anhui Medical Imaging Cloud Platform and the provincial hospital’s remote consultation system, serving 41 county hospitals across the province.
The smart hospital features several innovative products, including the "Xiaoxiao" AI guidance robot, an AI-assisted medical imaging system, voice-based electronic medical records, and mobile workstations equipped with cloud-based medical solutions. These tools are transforming how healthcare is delivered, making it more efficient, accurate, and accessible.
Steel Pole
HDG poles can be designed to encircle existing structures with ease and facilitate future expansion or retrofitting. HDG steel poles are self-conducting and thus have no need for a full-length copper grounding wire, and they can either be embedded or have an anchor base, and do not require fastener retightening due to pole shrinkage.
