Digital enthusiasts who follow the tech world are no strangers to MWC. This year, major global brands like Samsung and Sony will unveil their flagship devices at MWC 2018. Not only will we get a glimpse of this year's top smartphones, but we'll also see what the future holds for the communications industry.
Based on current information, we're here to provide a forward-looking summary of this year’s MWC, giving you an insight into the latest products that will be launched in 2018.
Samsung S9: A Strong Return to MWC with Innovation
As one of the most anticipated flagships at MWC, Samsung has a long tradition of launching its S-series phones there. Last year, due to some well-known issues, the S8 wasn't released at MWC. This year, the S9 is making a strong return, signaling Samsung’s confidence in both its product lineup and market recovery since the Galaxy Note 7 incident. According to recent reports, the S9 is expected to bring even more innovation to the table.
In terms of design, early leaks suggest that the S9 will closely resemble the Galaxy S8, with slight refinements in the details. The front and bottom bezels are expected to be narrower, while the mid-frame will have a slightly more pronounced design. Additionally, the glass will be 0.1mm thicker, offering better drop resistance. Some rumors suggest that the black border may appear slightly wider on the actual device compared to the S8.
Under the hood, the S9 is expected to pack top-tier hardware. It will likely come with either the Snapdragon 845 or the Exynos 9810. The Exynos 9810 has already been spotted in Geekbench 4 tests, scoring over 3,648 on single-core and 8,894 on multi-core, outperforming the Snapdragon 845. This makes it one of the most powerful SoCs available for Android devices.
Other features include 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, an 8MP front camera with autofocus, iris scanning, wireless charging, IP68 rating, and AKG-tuned speakers. Perhaps the most exciting feature is the variable aperture on the rear camera — it can switch between f/1.5 and f/2.4 depending on lighting conditions, improving low-light performance and image quality.
The Galaxy S9 will launch globally on March 16th, with a China regional event scheduled for March 6th. Available in four colors — midnight black, lilac violet, titanium gray, and coral blue — the pricing is still under wraps, but we’ll keep you updated.
Sony Xperia XZ Pro: 4K Display and “Black Technologyâ€
Sony’s Xperia XZ Pro is another highlight of MWC 2018, continuing the brand’s legacy of “black technology.†As the successor to the Xperia XZP, the XZ Pro is rumored to feature a 5.7-inch 4K display, powered by the Snapdragon 845. It will come with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage, and support IP68 waterproofing. The headphone jack will also be removed, aligning with industry trends.
The camera setup includes a dual-lens system with 18MP and 12MP sensors, each with large pixel sizes (1.38μm and 1.33μm), promising excellent low-light performance. The Xperia XZ Pro is expected to come in three colors — liquid black, liquid silver, and dark green — at a price of 699 euros.
Another model, the Xperia XZ2, is expected to be an upgrade from the XZ1. It will use the same Snapdragon 845 chip, with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, along with a 18:9 full-screen display. Leaks show it scored around 2,393 on single-core and 8,300 on multi-core, confirming its power and performance capabilities.
Sony is also preparing multiple memory configurations, including a 6GB version exclusive to the Asia-Pacific region. With these upgrades, the Xperia XZ Pro and XZ2 are set to deliver cutting-edge performance and design, making them must-watch devices at this year’s MWC.
