On March 8th, BOE (BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd.) announced its plan to invest in the construction of a sixth-generation flexible AMOLED production line in Chongqing and a 10.5th generation TFT-LCD production line in Wuhan, with an overall investment exceeding 100 billion yuan. This significant move highlights the company's continued commitment to expanding its display manufacturing capabilities and meeting the growing demand for advanced display technologies.
The Chongqing project, specifically for the sixth-generation flexible AMOLED line, involves a total investment of 46.5 billion yuan. The facility is designed to produce 48,000 glass substrates per month, with each substrate measuring 1,500mm by 1,850mm. These panels will be primarily used in smartphones, automotive displays, and foldable notebooks. The project is expected to start mass production in 2020, marking the third AMOLED production line in BOE’s flexible display strategy.
Previously, BOE had already established two sixth-generation flexible AMOLED lines in Chengdu and Mianyang. The Chengdu line has been in mass production, while the Mianyang line was completed and is anticipated to reach full-scale production in 2019. This expansion reflects BOE’s strategic push to strengthen its position in the global flexible display market.
According to IHS Markit, the flexible AMOLED panel market saw explosive growth in 2017, rising from $3.5 billion in 2016 to $12 billion, representing a staggering 250% increase. Looking ahead, the market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22% between 2017 and 2021. This trend underscores the increasing adoption of flexible display technology across various industries, including consumer electronics, automotive, and industrial applications.
With these new investments, BOE is well-positioned to capitalize on the rising demand for next-generation display solutions, further solidifying its role as a global leader in the display industry.
