AMD slows down the release of high-end processors

AMD has announced that it will slow down the release of high-end processors. This is not to say that AMD, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., will completely stop producing high-end CPUs.

Currently, the next-generation Vishera CPUs based on the Piledriver core FX series are expected to be officially launched this year from November to December. Vishera has more instructions per clock cycle, so it is expected that Vishera will be faster than the current FX processor, and its performance may be equal to or slightly lower than the Ivy Bridge.

AMD has not canceled Visera at present, but AMD also said quite clearly that AMD will not launch Vishara's successor in 2013.

This means that AMD will not even try hard to launch CPU products that rival Intel's Ivy Bridge-E and Hasswell chips. We already know what kind of monster the 10-core Ivy Bridge EP is. We are not surprised at AMD's decision.

The same strategy will apply to the server market: AMD will not introduce any high-end server processors in 2013, and the 10-core and 20-core Opterons have been canceled.

Obviously, AMD places most bets on graphics and APU business. AMD will benefit the most if it can come up with a fully-integrated APU in 2014 as scheduled. However, Intel is trying its best to improve its graphics products in order to catch up with AMD in this area.
