According to SIA, global chip revenue last year was 299.5 billion U.S. dollars, up from 298.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2010. In the fourth quarter of last year, global chip revenue was 71.5 billion U.S. dollars, down 5.3% year-on-year; last December, revenue was 23.8 billion U.S. dollars. This was a 5.5% reduction from the previous quarter.
“By being trapped in the overall impact of natural disasters in Japan, Thailand, and the weakening of the global economy, 2011 faced many major challenges for the semiconductor industry,†said Brian Toohey, president of SIA, “despite these downturns. However, the industry has shown its flexibility, achieving year-on-year growth, and revenue has also broken records."
SIA expects that the semiconductor industry will recover further this year, driven by the growth in demand from multiple markets. Intel, the world's largest microprocessor maker, fell 2 cents to close at $26.72 on Monday, and AMD's share price dropped 16 cents to $6.92.
