Amazon sits firmly in the smart speaker market leader MediaTek becomes the guest of all manufacturers

The smart speaker market is experiencing subtle but significant shifts following the launch of Apple's HomePod. According to Strategy Analytics, global smart speaker shipments reached 32 million units in the past year, representing a year-over-year increase of over 300%. In 2018, it's projected that shipments will hit 56.3 million units, with Amazon, one of the earliest players in the space, maintaining a dominant share of more than half. Just weeks after the HomePod’s release, its market share already reached 3%, signaling early traction. Rumors suggest Apple may introduce a more affordable version later this year, potentially priced at less than half of the current model, aiming to challenge Amazon’s stronghold in the smart speaker industry. Amazon, however, is not standing still. Its voice assistant, Alexa, has been a key driver behind the success of the Echo line and continues to be a major asset. Following the rise of the Echo, Amazon is accelerating the development of second-generation products and expanding its product lineup across high, mid, and low-end segments. This strategy aims to solidify its market position and ensure long-term stability. In addition, Amazon has introduced new devices like the Echo Spot and Echo Button, further integrating Alexa into the smart home ecosystem. As Amazon expands into Japanese and German markets, its dominance in the global voice interface market is expected to remain strong for the foreseeable future. MediaTek, as a key chip supplier, stands to benefit significantly from this growth. Currently, Alexa has access to a vast array of third-party hardware and software, making its capabilities increasingly robust. It excels in natural language understanding and provides more accurate responses compared to competitors like Microsoft’s Cortana or Apple’s Siri. Industry reports indicate that Amazon’s 2017 Echo series shipments exceeded 10 million units, possibly approaching 15 million. With new markets, applications, and products entering the Alexa ecosystem in 2018, the number of terminal devices powered by Alexa is expected to surge, potentially reaching between 30 to 40 million units. Among these, the Echo series remains central, but new offerings like the Echo Spot and Echo Button, along with emerging smart home products built on Alexa, are showing strong growth potential. These innovations are expected to help Amazon maintain its leadership in the global smart voice market. The rise of voice control is also influencing other industries. As voice interfaces become more embedded in smart homes and IoT devices, major consumer electronics companies are investing heavily in this trend. In 2018, high-cost appliances like TVs and refrigerators are increasingly featuring voice control options, driven by the success of platforms like Alexa. This shift has also encouraged tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Apple to compete fiercely with Amazon. Before this year’s CES, both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa announced partnerships with numerous hardware manufacturers. For example, Kia integrated Alexa, while Google Assistant partnered with Lenovo, HTC, and LG. As intelligent voice control spreads beyond English-speaking regions, it is now penetrating into a broader range of smart home products. Voice control is no longer limited to standalone devices—it is becoming an essential feature across various smart appliances. Meanwhile, MediaTek has emerged as a key player, securing contracts with multiple manufacturers. Having supplied chips for Amazon’s Echo series, it has gained recognition for its performance and reliability. Recently, MediaTek has also entered Apple’s HomePod supply chain, which could enhance the performance and market appeal of Apple’s smart voice devices going forward. Despite its progress, the voice interface still faces challenges, including speech recognition accuracy, noise reduction, and compatibility across different systems. Amazon currently leads in these areas, putting pressure on other competitors. While Apple’s HomePod introduction may bring some uncertainty, it is still too early to determine its full impact.
