Asha Keddy, Vice President of Intel's Client and IoT Business and Systems Architecture, and General Manager of the Standards and Next Generation Technology Team, shared her insights on the future of 5G technology during an exclusive interview at MWC2018.
At the recent MWC2018 event, Intel showcased a range of 5G technologies and practical applications that are set to shape the future of connectivity. These innovations span across media entertainment, connected vehicles, smart cities, and more, highlighting the transformative potential of 5G in everyday life.
Earlier this year, Intel partnered with KT, a leading Korean telecom provider, to deploy one of the largest 5G networks at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, successfully demonstrating the power of 5G in real-world scenarios. Looking ahead, Intel also announced plans to collaborate with NTT in Japan for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, aiming to expand the reach and capabilities of 5G technology globally.
During the show, Asha Keddy emphasized the importance of innovation and creativity, especially in major global events like the Winter Olympics. While many are looking forward to the Japanese Games, she believes the Beijing Winter Olympics will bring even more groundbreaking experiences.
With 5G commercialization expected by 2019, Asha noted that by the time of the 2022 Beijing Olympics, key standards such as 3GPP LTE Release 16 and 17 would already be in place. This will open up new possibilities for drones, autonomous vehicles, and other advanced technologies that could become part of daily life.
She also highlighted the significance of China in Intel’s global strategy. The Chinese government, along with the country’s three major telecom operators, is driving rapid development, and partnerships with local companies like Zhanrui are crucial for Intel’s success in the region.
In a recent collaboration, Intel and Zhanrui, a core company under Ziguang Group, launched a joint 5G smartphone solution. Intel provides the 5G modem technology, while Zhanrui handles the application processor (AP) part. “Working with AP vendors is one of our key business models,†Asha explained.
During the interview, Asha also discussed how 5G is enabling advancements in robotics and automation, particularly in driverless cars and manufacturing. At the MWC2018 Intel booth, visitors saw several 5G-powered demonstrations, including a True VR live broadcast from the PyeongChang Olympics, which offered an immersive experience through virtual reality.

Other examples included self-driving vehicles equipped with 5G technology that can communicate in real-time and perform road tests, as well as smart city solutions involving facial recognition and urban management.
As a key player in the 5G ecosystem, Intel focuses on developing the underlying network technologies, while the broader application of these innovations falls to internet companies and service providers. With 5G continuing to evolve, the future looks promising, filled with endless opportunities for innovation and transformation.
