With the continuous improvement of living standards, modernizing home life has become an inevitable trend. As a result, smart sensor trash cans have started to gain popularity, and they are expected to be the next big thing in household appliances. Just like energy-saving lamps and water dispensers once were, these intelligent trash cans are gradually becoming part of everyday life. In the coming years, we can expect them to become widely adopted in homes and public spaces.
The smart trash can was originally designed by a Japanese inventor known online as Modder FRP, who integrated somatosensory game technology into its design. This innovative approach allows the trash can to detect movement and interact with users in a more intuitive way.
Powered by a battery and equipped with wheels, the smart trash can is not just a passive object. It features built-in software that enables detection and accurate prediction of waste placement. To enhance its functionality, a Kinect sensor is installed on the wall to monitor the room's layout and determine where the garbage is located. This means the trash can can actively move and pick up waste instead of simply sitting in one place.
Let’s take a closer look at how it works. The system uses pyroelectric infrared sensors, infrared tubes, and microwave induction to automatically open the lid. Compared to traditional trash cans, this model includes an electronic control unit and a mechanical mechanism. The electronic part is controlled by an IC chip, which is relatively inexpensive—sensors used in this area cost less than five yuan. The mechanical part is simple, only responsible for opening and closing the lid.
The program is divided into three main blocks: the main loop, timer interrupts, and the pyroelectric infrared sensor interrupt. When someone enters the detection range of the sensor, the pyroelectric component detects the change in body heat and triggers a signal. This signal is processed through the internal circuitry (like the HN911 module) and sends a low-level signal to the microcontroller. This signal acts as an external interrupt, prompting the microcontroller to respond.
During the design phase, we considered using image processing for detection, but we found it too complex and environmentally sensitive. Instead, we opted for vibration and weight sensors, which are more reliable. Additionally, the PT2262/2272 infrared remote control chips help manage signals from the trash can itself.
Once the microcontroller is awake, it checks the input signals and opens the lid if necessary. If the trash can isn’t full, it remains closed until someone throws garbage in. At the same time, the voice module plays friendly messages to encourage people to keep the environment clean and make the experience more enjoyable.
One of the key features of this design is its energy-saving function. Using the Shengqun MCU, the system can enter sleep mode when no activity is detected. The PA port’s falling edge can wake it up, ensuring that power is only used when needed. This greatly reduces energy waste while maintaining efficiency.
In addition to being energy-efficient, the smart trash can is also hygienic. It eliminates the need to touch the lid directly, reducing the spread of germs. Its tight seal prevents odors and waste from leaking out, keeping the surrounding air fresh.
Another unique feature is its entertainment aspect. The voice system delivers humorous and encouraging messages, making the act of throwing away garbage more engaging, especially for children. This helps foster good habits and contributes to a cleaner, more pleasant environment.
