Shared bike companies like Mobike and Ofo continue to expand their global presence. At the end of last month, Mobike announced that its bikes are now available in Berlin, the capital of Germany. This marks the 200th city worldwide to offer Mobike services, a milestone that shows the company has exceeded its annual expansion targets ahead of schedule.
With such rapid growth, securing funding is crucial. On December 20th, Mobike revealed a strategic partnership with LINE, Japan’s leading mobile social networking service, often compared to China's WeChat. In addition, LINE has led the Series A funding round for Mobike Japan, marking the company’s first overseas investment.
The collaboration includes integrating Mobike into the LINE app, which has over 71 million users in Japan. This exclusive feature will make it easier for Japanese riders to access Mobike services directly from their smartphones.
Mobike first entered the Japanese market in June, establishing Mobike Japan in Fukuoka on Kyushu Island. Fukuoka became the third international city where Mobike launched its operations. The company aims to expand further across Japan in the coming months.
Japanese users can unlock Mobike bikes by scanning a QR code and paying via their mobile devices. The pricing model is competitive: a 30-minute ride costs around 100 yen (approximately RMB 6), significantly lower than the highest monthly rate of 30 yuan in Japan. This affordable option is expected to attract a large user base and boost Mobike’s foothold in the region.
As Mobike continues to grow globally, partnerships like this with local tech giants will play a key role in its success. With LINE’s support, Mobike is well-positioned to become a major player in the Japanese shared mobility market.
