With the continuous improvement of living standards, the modernization of home life has become an inevitable trend. Smart sensor trash cans are now being introduced by many traditional manufacturers, signaling a shift toward more convenient and hygienic waste management solutions. As with energy-saving lamps and water dispensers in the past, these smart trash cans are expected to become widely adopted in the near future.
Developed by a Japanese inventor known online as Modder FRP, this innovative trash can integrates somatosensory game technology, making it one of the most advanced waste disposal systems available today. Powered by batteries and equipped with wheels for easy mobility, the smart trash can uses built-in software for detection and predictive analysis. It also works in conjunction with a Kinect sensor installed on the wall, which helps track the location of garbage in the room.
This invention ensures that the trash can is no longer just a passive object sitting in a corner—it actively moves and collects garbage when needed. The system is designed to detect human presence using pyroelectric infrared, infrared tubes, and microwave induction, allowing the lid to open automatically without physical contact.
Compared to traditional trash cans, smart versions include electronic components and mechanical drive systems. The electronics are controlled by an IC chip, with sensors costing less than five yuan. The mechanical part is simple, responsible for opening and closing the lid. The program is divided into three main blocks: the main program waits for a delay, handles timing interrupts, and responds to signals from the pyroelectric infrared sensor.
When a person enters the sensor’s range, the pyroelectric component detects the body's heat radiation, causing a charge imbalance. This triggers the internal circuit to generate an electrical signal, which is then sent to the microcontroller as a falling edge interrupt. While image processing was considered for better object recognition, it was abandoned due to high computational demands and environmental sensitivity. Instead, vibration and weight sensors are used to detect when something is thrown into the bin.
The system also includes an infrared remote control pair (PT2262/2272), which helps identify when the trash can is full or when someone is throwing garbage. Once the microcontroller confirms the action, it activates the solenoid to open the lid. Additionally, a voice module provides humorous messages to encourage proper waste disposal and promote environmental awareness.
One of the key features of this design is its energy-saving function. The Shengqun MCU has a sleep-wake-up feature that turns off non-essential circuits when no activity is detected, significantly reducing power consumption. When someone approaches, the HN911 circuit wakes up the microcontroller, restoring full functionality while maintaining efficiency.
In terms of hygiene, the automatic lid mechanism eliminates the need for manual contact, reducing the risk of germs and cross-infection. The sealed design prevents odors from escaping, keeping the surrounding air fresh. The system also adds an element of fun through its voice feedback, encouraging people—especially children—to dispose of waste properly.
Finally, the smart trash can is versatile, available in various colors, sizes, and materials, making it suitable for homes, offices, public spaces, and even medical facilities. Its combination of convenience, hygiene, and entertainment makes it a promising solution for the future of waste management.
