Curved TV sales growth contrarian, this year will exceed 4 million

Since its introduction in 2014, curved TVs have captured widespread attention and have been growing at an impressive average annual rate of 300%. Even as the broader TV market faced challenges, especially over the past two years when overall sales declined, curved TVs continued to rise against the trend, steadily gaining traction. This growth has helped them carve out a solid position in the high-end home appliance sector.

At the Surface Display Forum held in Beijing last month, Yikang released data showing that curved TV sales are expected to surpass 4 million units in 2017. In the first half of this year, the market for 40-inch and larger flat-screen TVs dropped by 7% compared to the previous year. However, curved TVs with screens of 48 inches or larger saw a 7% increase in sales. Additionally, the share of curved TVs in the 48-inch and above segment reached 13.5%, up 5 percentage points from the previous year. Despite the tough market conditions, curved TVs continue to show strong performance, making them a standout in the industry.

During the forum, Bai Weimin, Executive Vice President of the China Electronics and Video Industry Association, stated: “This year’s color TV market hasn’t gone as smoothly as expected. Especially in the first quarter, the market experienced a downturn, and the second quarter didn’t improve much. Only through technological innovation and industry breakthroughs can we ensure sustainable development.”

Bai’s comments not only highlighted the current situation but also explained why curved TVs have managed to thrive despite the challenges. Compared to traditional flat TVs, curved models offer more than just a new look—they represent real technological progress. They enhance the viewing experience with a stronger sense of immersion and realism, while also considering human eye curvature in their design. This ergonomic approach reduces screen distortion by up to 73.1% and creates a more cinematic visual and audio experience, helping viewers better absorb the content on screen.

Dong Wentian, vice president of Peking University’s No.6 Hospital, shared findings from a recent study: “Compared to flat displays, curved screens excel in two areas—information focus and reading efficiency. Curved displays showed a 30%, 20%, and 16% improvement in total interest points, saccade length, and saccade speed, respectively. This means they capture more attention and allow for faster reading. In terms of concentration, curved TVs clearly outperform flat ones.”

Although curved TVs have been around for three years, they are still relatively new to the home appliance market. This year, they aim to make a stronger impression on consumers. Looking ahead, there are still many challenges and uncertainties. Where exactly curved TVs will go next remains unclear. However, as consumer preferences shift toward premium products and demand for advanced technology continues to grow, the future for curved TVs still looks promising.
