Curved TV sales growth contrarian, this year will exceed 4 million

Since its introduction in 2014, curved televisions have captured the public's imagination and have been growing at an impressive annual rate of 300%. Despite the overall decline in color TV sales in recent years, especially with the broader electronics market experiencing a slowdown, curved TVs have defied the trend. They have not only maintained their momentum but also continued to break records, establishing themselves as a strong presence in the high-end home appliance sector. At the Surface Display Forum held in Beijing last month, Yikang shared data showing that curved TV sales are expected to surpass 4 million units in 2017. In the first half of this year, the market for 40-inch and larger flat-screen TVs dropped by 7% compared to the previous year, while curved TVs with screens of 48 inches or larger saw a 7% increase. The share of curved TVs in the 48-inch and above segment reached 13.5%, up 5 percentage points from the previous year. Even in a challenging market, curved TVs continue to shine—like a hit in the competitive TV industry. During the forum, Bai Weimin, executive vice president of the China Electronics and Video Industry Association, emphasized that the color TV market has not met expectations this year. He pointed out that the first quarter saw a downturn, and the second quarter didn’t improve much. “Only through technological innovation and industry breakthroughs can we ensure sustainable development,” he said. Bai’s remarks highlighted not just the challenges, but also the reasons behind the success of curved TVs. Compared to traditional flat screens, curved TVs offer more than just a new look—they represent real technical progress. These TVs enhance the viewing experience by providing a more immersive feel, mimicking the natural curvature of the human eye. This design reduces screen distortion by 73.1% and delivers a cinema-like visual and audio experience, making it easier for viewers to focus on what matters. Dong Wentian, vice president of Peking University No.6 Hospital, presented findings from a study conducted in July. The research showed that curved displays outperformed flat ones in two key areas: information focus and reading efficiency. Curved screens increased the number of points of interest by 30%, reduced saccade length by 20%, and improved saccade speed by 16%. This means that viewers can absorb more information faster and stay more focused when watching curved TVs. Although curved TVs have been around for three years, they are still relatively new to the home appliance market. This year, they are making a stronger impression on consumers. Looking ahead, there are still many challenges to overcome. Where exactly will curved TVs go next? No one can say for sure yet. However, as consumer preferences shift toward higher-end products and the demand for advanced technology continues to grow, the future of curved TVs remains promising.
