2016 is called “VR/AR first yearâ€. Today we will use two articles to review the VR/AR field in 2016 and make a forecast for 2017. The authors of these two articles are Jacob Mullins, a senior partner in the VR/AR direction of Shasta Ventures, and co-founder of Exitround, a website that closes the closing agreement with potential acquirers.
2016 Top Ten VR Products
After studying, analyzing and experimenting with the virtual reality industry in 2016, I found the best ten VR experiences of the past year.
This top ten list is based on my experience of spending 100 hours on all major platforms and feedback from nearly 100 first-time VR users in Shasta's VR lab.
1. Best WebVR Experience: YouTube VR (Gear VR, Daydream, Cardboard, Web VR)
YouTube has amazingly diverse VR videos, high volume production and lots of user-generated content. You can fly in the sky in Blue Angels, swim with the great white shark, or stand on the stage of Hamilton. All the actors at the Broadway theater sing "Wait For It" around you. All of this can be accessed directly from the web and viewed using Cardboard. And if you use the native Google Daydream VR app, this will be the best way to explore VR/360 and non-VR content on YouTube.
2. Best Big IP Adaptation: Batman Arkham VR (PlaystaTIon VR)
While PlaystaTIon VR offers significantly less interactive experience than indoor VR, Batman Arkham VR is a super compelling VR experience because you can fight against crime like a Batman. The ability of VR to create “existence†for people in real or fictional environments is incredible. Just as you inadvertently, you have started to throw bat stars, fly with bat wings, and fight with Gotham’s crimes like Batman. . This is just one direction for companies with large IPs such as Marvel, Disney or Warner Bros. to make IP adaptations. I can't wait to be James? Bond.
3. Best Social VR: Rec Room (Oculus Touch, HTC Vive)
Rec Room's high CGI design and relatively intuitive user controls encourage natural social experiences, bringing people together to play simple campus games. While social interaction is usually a secondary purpose - playing games is usually the main purpose, the social interaction of this game is the best VR social interaction I have ever seen. In other socially-oriented experiences, too many times you will encounter cold start problems, people/avatars standing around, and there is hardly anything to do or talk about. This is very embarrassing and strange, and it does not give a warm experience. In the Rec Room, users can quickly enter the competitive game of Paddleball, Dodgeball or Paintbal, and the dialogue inside and outside the game is also a very natural interaction.
4. The most "existence" product in VR: Ritchie's Plank Experience (HTC Vive)
Ritchie's Plank Experience, the simplest app on the list, is by far the most "productive" product. In this experience, the user's settings are in a high CGI environment, in an elevator of an ascending skyscraper. On the top floor of the building, the elevator door opened, with only one piece of wood from the elevator to the opposite open space. In such a simple setting, in the Shasta VR lab, almost no users can express this experience in words. Even if you know that you are standing on the solid ground in the office, your senses and brain are receiving you. Steady state signal. This is a prime example of immersion in virtual reality.
5. The most demonstrated application: TheBlu, Wevr (HTCVive)
TheBlu should be one of the most demonstrated apps on HTC Vive because it shows the special and unique features of VR. Especially for those who have never been exposed to VR, or who are nervous about dizziness and who are looking forward to the underwater world, this gentle deep sea experience allows them to understand at their own pace. Art is beautiful, and each of the three experiences of the app contains a dramatic moment made up of characteristic underwater creatures.
6. Best Sports VR: VR Sports Challenge (Oculus Touch)
Although its game mechanics can be designed to be more complex for indoor scales, Oculus Rift's VR SportsChallenge has given users a thrill of professional athlete competition. You can capture rugby, find passers on the court, or prevent the opponent from hitting the hockey. This product gives the NFL, FIFA, NBA or NHL sports games a future in VR.
7. Best Interactive Videos: Gnomes & Goblins (preview), Wevr (HTC Vive)
Gnomes & Goblins (preview) was created by actor and writer Jon Favrear and is one of the best opportunities for VR to create interactive movies. G&G uses the size of the room, interactive characters, and even directed audio to guide the user through the changes in the storyline that each interaction brings. This is the best VR experience I have ever seen, and it's just a preview. It gives the user an immersive immersion, and you'll keep kicking, squatting, jumping, and even lying down. I don't realize that you are really interacting and entertaining.
8. The most addictive VR experience: Raw Data, Survios (HTC Vive)
Survios'Raw Data is the most addictive single-person first-person shooter VR. The interaction between the user and the robot's target can increase a person's blood pressure by 20 mm Hg. The height of the room space utilized by this application is the highest in the VR applications I've seen, which leads to more physical movements: six degrees of freedom, such as full body rotation, twisting, stretching and jumping. Robot attacks are getting harder and harder. When there is something behind you, just the right audio will make you feel like the heart is stopping. You still need to be alert to the undead robots attacking you from behind. This game is hard enough to keep you playing for hours, while letting you sweat like a workout. Multiplayer collaboration is even more interesting, and a competitive PvP multiplayer model will be revolutionary.
9. The most loved VR experience: TIltBrush (HTC Vive)
The VR award from Google's TIltBrush is the "everyone loves" award. It is a simple art creation application that allows users to paint with "light". This is the most natural VR UI I have seen combining hardware and software. Users can immediately see how they should paint when they first use it, but they are still surprised when they see that they can move and interact in 3D. At Shasta VR Labs, our passionate online creation art ranges from 3 years and a half to 65 years old. Most of today's VR apps are "consumer" experiences, and TiltBrush gives us a "creative" experience. The recently released Oculus's Medium and Quill are also the same applications, and are looking forward to the next year's evolution of the "creative" category of VR applications.
10. Receive the most requested VR experience: Space Pirate Trainer (Oculus Touch, HTC Vive)
SPT is actually a very simple game. It is a first person shooter game where you stand on a platform to protect yourself from laser shots of space drones. You have two guns and a shield, and you can decide which two are held in your hand at what time. It's simple enough, so that the first time users can feel the progress, but it is good enough, let us old players continue to play for hours, days, even weeks for the last point. Making full use of the indoor space is also a good exercise, you can kneel, evade, block, lasso, laser, bomb and blast the drone to keep yourself alive. This is a game that will be repeated for both old players and novices.
