Beijing Zhongguancun Park Management Committee’s WeChat public account “Innovation and Entrepreneurship Zhongguancun†published an article saying that recently Apple Research and Development (Beijing) Co., Ltd. was established in Chaoyang Park, Zhongguancun. It is understood that this company is Apple's first direct investment R&D center in China.
Apple R&D (Beijing) Co., Ltd. has a registered capital of 100 million yuan, a total investment of 300 million yuan and a total of about 500 employees. The company is located in Chaoyang Park, Zhongguancun, near the East Lake Drainage Station on Metro Line 14. The company is committed to the research and development of advanced technologies such as computer software and hardware, communications, audio and video equipment, consumer electronics product technology and information technology.
On August 16th this year, when Apple CEO Tim Cook visited China, he said that with the growing strength of the local team in China, Apple hopes to expand its operations in China by setting up a new R&D center. The R&D center will be completed later this year and will be used to converge Apple's engineering and operations teams in China. Users in China and around the globe will continue to build leading technologies and services for Apple products. The new R&D center will also be committed to strengthening its relationship with local partners and universities and supporting nationwide talent development.
The statement at the time did not mention the location of the R&D center or the amount of investment. It is only vague to talk about the specific completion time of the R&D center being “later in the year†and its function is to create products that are more suitable for Chinese users and strengthen cooperation with local partners and universities.
From the R&D center and software products developed for Chinese consumers with unique features, it can be seen that Apple began to stress the revenue of software services beyond hardware sales. According to a statistical report released by APP Annie, the income of the iOS APP Store in Greater China in the first quarter of this year has exceeded that of Japan, which is about 30% lower than that of the United States.
