LED invention process and legendary scientist Nick Holonyak Jr

The scientific name of the LED is a formal light-emitting diode, which is a semiconductor solid-state light-emitting device. The solid-state semiconductor chip is used as a light-emitting material, and is encapsulated by an epoxy resin. In the semiconductor, the carrier is combined to release excess energy to cause photon emission. There are no shortcomings such as filament light-emitting, heat deposition, light decay, etc., and directly emit red, yellow, blue, green, cyan, orange, purple, and white light. LED lighting products are lighting fixtures that are manufactured using LEDs as light sources. LED is called the fourth-generation illumination source or green light source. It has the characteristics of energy saving, environmental protection, long life and small size. It can be widely used in various fields such as indication, display, decoration, backlight, general illumination and urban night scene. In recent years, some economically developed countries in the world have launched a fierce technical competition around the development of LEDs. For example, the United States has invested US$500 million to implement the national semiconductor lighting plan since 2000, and the European Union also announced in July 2000. Similar rainbow projects, all hope to sweep away the old days of white light bulbs.

In the industry, some people call the LED light source a long-life lamp, which means a lamp that never goes out. Due to the fast response and long life of the LED, the LED lamp has good vibration resistance and small size, which can improve the utilization of the limited space of the car. Especially in the aspect of energy saving, the LED becomes the new light source of the headlight. It is rising rapidly. When we use ordinary light bulbs on the headlights, each of the required power is 55-60 watts, and after using the LEDs, it may be 3-5 watts, which saves a lot of energy and consumption. The variability of LED luminaires not only provides greater design space and freedom for the design of the headlamps, but may even lead to changes in the styling of the car, which may be more streamlined and more fashionable.

The hot LED issue has become the focus of the world. Who is the first person to invent LEDs? Many people may not know that Nick Holonyak Jr., who invented LEDs in 1962, was an ordinary researcher at the General Electric Company (GE, also known as Singular). The first red LED, and he also believes that other wavelengths of light can be emitted in the future, which means that LEDs will have many different colors, and future white lamps will be replaced by LEDs.

Nick Holonyak Jr. received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (EE) from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. When he received his Ph.D. in 1954 and entered the American Bell Telephone Lab, one of the most important private research institutions in the United States, he Only 26 years old, he is full of outstanding talents. In 1954 he entered the US military service, then began to enter GE in 1957, continued to work until 1963, also invented the first semiconductor laser device that emits red light, which is called LD, called laser diode It was a key component of many optical disc devices, printers or photocopiers.

After inventing the LED, Nick Holonyak Jr. left GE in 1963 to become his alma mater, the professor of electrical engineering at the University of Illinois, as mentioned above, becoming a specialized talent trainer and a ethical scientist. Many of its students later set up their own business in Silicon Valley, California, and participated in the technology wave driven by Silicon Valley.
