In recent years, the State Intellectual Property Office has released the list of national intellectual property demonstration and advantageous enterprises for 2017. A total of 182 companies were recognized as national intellectual property demonstration enterprises, including Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co., Ltd. and 15 other enterprises from Zhejiang Province. Additionally, 816 enterprises were designated as national intellectual property advantage enterprises, with 39 of them also coming from Zhejiang. The period for the construction of these enterprises ran from December 2017 to November 2020.
According to a report titled “In-depth Research and Investment Prospect Forecast Report of China's Intelligent Security Industry in 2017–2021†by China Investment Consulting, the U.S., Japan, China, and South Korea have emerged as key technology originators in the field of intelligent security. Together, they account for 80.5% of global patent applications in this area. However, despite significant progress, China still lags behind the U.S. and Japan in terms of technological innovation and overall competitiveness.
Leading Chinese security companies such as Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co., Ltd. and Zhejiang Dahua Technology Co., Ltd. have been continuously increasing their R&D investments. For example, in 2014, Hangzhou Hikvision had 30.8% of its workforce dedicated to R&D, and its R&D expenditure accounted for 7.55% of total revenue. These figures highlight the growing emphasis on research and development within the domestic security sector, showing a steady improvement in technological capabilities.

In summary, while China's security industry has made remarkable strides, there remains a significant gap compared to international counterparts. To close this gap, continuous investment in R&D, breakthroughs in key technologies, and enhanced innovation are essential. With a stable economic environment and increasing demands for public safety, smart security systems are expected to see long-term growth and development. The civil security market is expanding rapidly, offering substantial opportunities for the security industry to innovate and improve its systems.
Both the government and industry players must remain focused, invest in fundamental research, adopt disruptive technologies, and enhance service quality to stay competitive on the global stage. By doing so, China can strengthen its position in the intelligent security field and ensure sustainable development in the years to come.
