Express "robot" pilot area will be extended to the entire eco-city

"Jingdong Express recently introduced a 'robot' courier that has become a popular attraction in the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City. The robot is currently being tested in a real urban environment, marking the beginning of a new era of intelligent and unmanned logistics in the Binhai New Area. When the goods are placed into the container box, the system automatically sends a verification code to the consignee, notifying them that the delivery will be made by a robot. The robot has dimensions of 1390×780×1330mm, with six compartments—four small and two medium-sized. It is designed for urban deliveries, such as from distribution centers to office buildings, convenience stores, and parks. The robot follows a fixed route and loads packages at the starting point. In the future, it aims to expand into open urban environments as policies evolve. Each robot can carry 6 to 8 small to medium-sized packages, with a maximum load capacity of 150 kilograms. It can deliver between 10 to 20 parcels per hour and operates efficiently during the day after a full night charge. Currently, the service is available in four areas: Vantone Community, Vanke Community, the Eco-City Management Committee, and the Animation Park. During a live demonstration, the robot was seen traveling from the Animation Park to the Eco-City Management Committee. After loading the package, an instruction was sent, and the robot immediately started its journey. The system also notified the consignee via text message. Along the way, the robot navigated turns, avoided obstacles, and politely moved around pedestrians. Upon arrival, another message was sent, prompting the recipient to collect the package. Ms. Liu, who works at the Administrative Committee, was waiting when the robot arrived. She entered the verification code on the screen, and the compartment opened automatically. She told the reporter, “This is the first time I’ve received a delivery from a robot, and it’s incredibly convenient. It saves manpower and makes life more intelligent.” The robot uses advanced technologies such as autonomous driving, artificial intelligence, environmental awareness, high-precision positioning, and decision-making control. If the consignee doesn’t receive the message in time, the robot will wait for 20–30 minutes. If not collected, it will send a follow-up message and attempt delivery the next day. Besides using a verification code, users can also bind their facial information through a mobile app, allowing them to simply scan their face to access the package. As the robot continues to operate in the city and improve, the test area is expected to expand across the entire eco-city, further advancing the concept of smart, unmanned delivery."
