Alibaba and MediaTek Collaborate to Create Smartmesh Wireless Connectivity Solution Supporting Bluetooth Mesh Technology

Alibaba's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (AI Labs) and MediaTek entered into a strategic cooperation agreement at CES 2018, aiming to foster long-term collaboration in smart home control protocols, IoT chip customization, and AI-powered smart devices. This partnership was designed to accelerate the development of the intelligent Internet of Things (IoT). Following the successful customization of a high-performance chip for the Tmall Elf smart speaker, the two companies jointly developed the first Smartmesh wireless connectivity solution that supports Bluetooth mesh technology, paving the way for broader commercial adoption in smart homes. The Smartmesh solution is built on the latest Bluetooth mesh technology and Bluetooth 5 capabilities. MediaTek’s custom-designed Bluetooth chips, MT7581 and MT7583, tailored for Alibaba, offer features such as Bluetooth Smartmesh, automatic pairing, fast connection, and ultra-low power consumption. These advancements allow smart home devices to quickly and seamlessly connect, helping to expand the Tmall Elf-centered smart home ecosystem. Yan Renjie, Deputy General Manager of MediaTek and General Manager of the Family Entertainment Products Business Group, emphasized that the collaboration with Alibaba's AI Lab aims to drive the smart home ecosystem around voice interaction. Building on the success of their previous work on the Tmall Wizard X1 smart speaker, both companies believe that their combined strengths in networking technology, mobile computing, cloud computing, and AI will speed up the arrival of the IoT era. The Tmall Elf, developed by Alibaba's AI Lab, offers users an innovative voice-interactive experience. By the end of July 2017, it had already supported nearly 500 smart devices, and during the 2017 Double 11 Global Shopping Festival, it achieved a sales milestone of over one million units. Chen Lijuan, Head of Alibaba's AI Lab, highlighted that the company plans to deepen its exploration in the IoT field. By combining Alibaba’s AI and cloud computing expertise with MediaTek’s chip design capabilities, the two companies aim to deliver a unique smart home networking solution that enhances user experience. This collaboration reflects their shared vision of creating a future where everything is connected through innovation in the IoT era. In addition to the Smartmesh solution, Alibaba also introduced the IoTConnect open protocol based on Bluetooth mesh technology, making it available to the entire industry. This initiative allows smart devices to interconnect more easily, automatically form networks, adjust themselves, and support the Tmall Wizard’s voice control system. The goal is to promote interoperability across the IoT industry, reduce R&D costs, and encourage the widespread adoption of voice-interactive platforms.

Programming Instructions
• Plug the Remoce Socket$($)lnto the wall socket(s) and switch on the mams supply, the red LED will flash every second.
• If the LED is not flashing press & hold the manual ON/OFF button for 5 seconds until it Hashes

•Press any ON switch on the Remote Control for approximately 2 seconds and the Remote Socket(s) learn the code. The LED will stop flashing top confirm the codehas been accepted.
• Any number of Remote Sockets can be programmed to one Remote Control ON button to create multiple switching.
• To programme o<her Remote Sockets on different Remote Control ON buttons repeat the prevous steps
• If the mains supply is turned off the Remote Sockets v/ill lose their code and it wil be necessary to re-pcogramme.
Operation:
• Plug your appliance(s) into the Remote Socket(s)
• Press the programmed ON or OFF button on the Remote Control to control the Remote Socket.
♦ The Remote Sockets can also be operated manually using its ON/OFF Button Trouble shooting
If a Remote Socket does not react to the Remote Control please check the followng:
♦ Low battery in tbo Remote Control
• Distance too large between the remote control and the recerver (ensure the range distance is no more than 20 clear Metres) and free from obstacle that may reduce the distance.
• If programming has not been successful, tum the power off and back on then follow the programming steps above.
How to decode
