[NetEase Smart News, January 18th] According to reports from foreign media, just one month after announcing plans to open its first personal smart lab in Beijing, Google has made another move into the Chinese market by establishing a presence in Shenzhen.
According to an internal email shared with TechCrunch, the U.S. tech giant has opened an office in Shenzhen, a global hub for hardware located just across from Hong Kong. However, this isn't a full-scale Google campus—so far, it's just a rented office space.
A company spokesperson confirmed the news to TechCrunch, stating, "We have many important customers and partners in Shenzhen, and we're here to build offices to better communicate and collaborate with them."
Here’s a short message from Google to its employees:
Hello everyone from Google China, I hope you have a great year in 2018!
I wanted to let you know that we’ve opened a new office in Shenzhen. As you know, we have many Google employees in China who frequently travel there. We've received a lot of feedback that Shenzhen needs a dedicated office. After several months of research, we recently rented a serviced office in the city. It's now up and running, and we hope it will provide a comfortable workspace for our team in the area.
Shenzhen is home to Tencent, the company behind WeChat, as well as major mobile companies like Huawei and ZTE. Alibaba, Baidu, and numerous startups are also based in the city. Shenzhen is known for its vibrant startup ecosystem, including the global hardware accelerator HAX.
The establishment of Google's AI Lab in China is a significant move. By tapping into China's growing pool of AI talent, it suggests that Google may be shifting its focus toward the Chinese market. Additionally, last year saw the relaunch of Google Translate in China, which sparked speculation about the company's return to the region. Opening an office in Shenzhen is a more strategic step, reinforcing the city's importance to Google’s business strategy.
The Shenzhen office is likely to serve teams that have been working extensively in the area. Google believes that having a fixed workplace is more effective than working from hotels or public spaces. The sales, hardware, and logistics teams in China are expected to use the office most. In the future, Google may look for a more permanent location and add more Google-style elements, but for now, this remains on hold.
Google previously spent $1.1 billion to acquire a large portion of HTC's smartphone business, and the Shenzhen office reflects its growing commitment to the Chinese market. According to a recent report by The Information, Google is strengthening its hardware operations in China. The report noted that the number of engineers in Google's hardware department in Shanghai has grown from around 20 people a year ago to over 100 today.
Benjamin Joffe, a general partner at HAX, told TechCrunch, "I hope Google will develop more Home series products in Shenzhen. More people might start traveling to Shenzhen for Google events, especially during CES. With their expanding product line, Google could follow in the footsteps of Apple and Amazon, drawing more people to work and live in Nanshan or Futian districts."
