On January 21, during the 2018 Geek Park Innovation Conference, Zhang Peng, founder and CEO of Gekko Park, engaged in a thought-provoking discussion with Robin Li, founder and CEO of Baidu, titled "Peng You Says: Where Technology is Going in the New Era." The conversation delved into the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on both consumer behavior and business models.
Li Yanhong emphasized that the AI era isn't just reshaping how people consume but also redefining the very concept of supply. He highlighted that search engines are, in essence, a form of artificial intelligence. "Search is about solving user needs to access information efficiently," he explained. "At the time, we weren’t using AI technology explicitly, but the core idea was there."
Zhang Peng then raised an interesting point about human inertia, asking how many people would report directly to Li Yanhong in two years, suggesting a shift toward more professional management. Li responded by noting that today's situation is already halfway improved from two years ago. He stressed that the best managers are those who don’t see themselves as mere administrators, but rather as passionate individuals who treat the company like their own. He encouraged a more positive and proactive mindset when dealing with business challenges.
The discussion also touched on the role of open platforms. When asked whether open platforms act as "road rollers" — a metaphor for forcing progress — Li disagreed. Instead, he argued that open platforms foster healthier and faster development across the industry by encouraging collaboration and innovation.
Regarding Baidu’s approach to information delivery, Li Yanhong reflected on whether the company had fully leveraged information flow, data, and algorithms. He clarified that while algorithms play a crucial role, they aren’t the sole driver of information sharing. Socially driven information flows involve more user initiative, whereas algorithm-based streams rely on machine predictions.
"In short, algorithms are efficient, but they lack social engagement," Li said. "The ideal information flow combines both algorithmic precision and social interaction." This balance, he believes, leads to a richer and more meaningful user experience.
