The Gear VR helmet was jointly developed by Samsung and Facebook subsidiary Oculus. But unlike similar products like the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, the Samsung Gear VR has no internal projectors. It is more similar to Google Daydream and requires smartphone support. Although this limits the image quality and processing power of Gear VR, it also greatly reduces equipment costs. You don't need to spend thousands of dollars to buy powerful computers and VR helmets. If you have a compatible Samsung Galaxy series, you only need to spend another $100 to experience VR.
You may not get the same immersive experience as Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, but Gear VR also has many killer apps worth trying. Samsung also announced an end-to-end VR experience in 2017, including simple 360-degree panoramic photography and video. At the same time, Samsung has partnered with TV channels Viceland, The New York Times and Six Flags to launch 10 million hours of video content for Gear VR.
It is worth noting that although Samsung shipped 5 million Gear VR helmets, not all helmets were sold by Samsung. Many Gear VRs are bundled with Samsung phones and sometimes even serve as freebies.
