ARM A73 and G71 will make AR and VR a daily experience

May 30, 2016, Beijing News - ARM today announced the launch of its latest high-end mobile processor technology portfolio, redefining the flagship device launch in 2017. The ARM Cortex-A73 processor and ARM Mali-G71 graphics processor deliver long-lasting optimal energy efficiency and performance status, giving new products enhanced context and vision capabilities. This helps the device run HD content for longer periods of time with limited mobile power budget.

Pete Hutton, ARM's executive vice president and president of the product division, said: "Smartphones are the most popular computing devices in the world, and their performance has improved with continuous innovation. With lasting and outstanding performance, and stunning visual effects, We will see the Cortex-A73 and Mali-G71-based devices stand out in 2017. This makes 4K video, VR and AR a daily experience through mobile devices."

Mali-G71 : A leap in ARM Mali GPU performance

The Mali-G71 graphics processor (GPU) will further drive the industry's first shipment of the ARM Mali series. The new graphics processor delivers up to 1.5x better graphics performance for next-generation high-end smartphones, 20% more power efficiency, and 40% more performance per square millimeter.

The Mali-G71 effectively increases the shader core to a maximum of 32, which is twice the size of the Mali-T880, and its performance far exceeds the discrete GPUs in today's mid-range notebooks. The Mali-G71 GPU fully supports consistency, helping to simplify software development and increase efficiency, delivering the VR and AR experience in the mobile power range. Authorized partners include leading chip suppliers such as Hisilicon, MediaTek and Samsung Electronics.

The Mali-G71 is based on Bifrost, the third-generation GPU architecture. Based on the innovative technology of the previous two generations of Utgard and Midgard architectures, Bifrost is the best choice for Vulkan and other industry standard APIs.

Niklas Smedberg, director of collaborative technology at Epic Games, said: "Virtual reality is one of the most important epoch-making technologies of this generation of game industry. Therefore, on all platforms, especially mobile devices, the fascinating virtual reality experience is the industry's continued growth and The key to progress. In order to get a great mobile VR experience, the device needs to have the best performance and energy performance."

Clive Downie, Unity's chief marketing officer, said: "Obviously, the number of smartphones in the world has doubled that of personal computers, becoming the most important device for promoting virtual reality games. ARM is driving the mobile VR and AR ecosystem. The investment is quite wise, and through its energy-efficient and high-performance technology solutions, it continues to establish its leadership position in the mobile field and expand the possibilities of the virtual world."

Cortex-A73 : More efficient and powerful mobile SoC

With a single core area of less than 0.65 square millimeters (in 10 nanometer FinFET process technology), the Cortex-A73 is the smallest and most energy efficient ARMv8-A architecture "big" core ever. Compared to the Cortex-A72, its advanced mobile microarchitecture increases power efficiency and sustained performance by 30%.

The size and efficiency improvements give the Cortex-A73 greater flexibility in ARM big.LITTLE configurations, allowing designers to extend the fit of large cores to GPUs and other IP in a single system-on-a-chip (SoC). To date, ten partners such as Hisilicon, Marvell and MediaTek have been licensed by Cortex-A73.

He Zhuming, president of Huawei's mobile phone business, said: "To provide consumers with a better mobile experience, Huawei will continue to enhance the overall performance of our high-end mobile phones. ARM has made system-level considerations when developing IP, which ensures Our design team is able to maximize the energy efficiency and performance of the overall equipment."

In addition to smartphones, ARM's latest high-end IP portfolio delivers higher performance density and throughput for a wide range of consumer electronics products, including large-screen computing devices, industrial gateways, automotive entertainment systems and smart TVs.

Partner testimony

Qiu Qiu, deputy general manager of Hessing's business unit, said: "It is quite complicated to improve performance and efficiency at the same time. We must consider all aspects when designing SoC. ARM verifies all CPU, GPU and CCI interconnection IP, enabling it to be at high speed. Better operation in a cache-coherent system allows our team to shorten the design cycle and focus on computing the most intensive application design."

Mark MonTIerth, vice president of Business and Consumer Solutions Business Unit, said: "Mayman Electronics is the industry's leading ARM-based SoC supplier, known for its groundbreaking performance and functionality. The new ARM Cortex-A73 enables us to Continue to provide customers with best-in-class solutions and set new standards in functionality and performance. The ARM Cortex-A73 delivers a high-performance, energy-efficient processor for our MoChiTM family of application processors."

Rolly Chang, vice president of MediaTek's corporate and general manager of the wireless communications division, said: "Linfa's customers are building high-end experience devices that are more energy efficient and performance-required. Working with ARM ensures that our SoC design can be given An unparalleled high-end experience for a generation of mobile devices."

Jae Cheol Son, senior vice president of Samsung's electronic processor R&D team, said: "The next generation of high-end experience will depend on the breakthrough development of mobile VR and AR. The scalable Mali-G71 GPU will help the Samsung design team to cope with the increasingly complex mobile VR. And AR use cases."

2017 smart phone challenge

Creating a very narrow bezel, higher screen resolution, longer battery life, and slimmer devices are challenges for today's device manufacturers. These design requirements require equipment processing technology to continue to strive for excellence in size, energy efficiency and performance. This challenge is even more intense with mobile VR/AR, 4K 120 video, Hi-Fi quality sound, and the proliferation of cameras. Advanced modem technology not only provides greater bandwidth communication, but also meets the demanding mobile cooling budget, increasing the need for energy efficiency.

Overall SoC security and energy efficiency

Because users store sensitive data and features on their smartphones, their security features are more important than ever. ARM's high-end IP is based on ARM TrustZone® technology and provides bank-level confidence in billions of device SoCs.

As SoCs become more complex to meet new application requirements, achieving energy efficiency and performance throughout the system becomes a design point. Optimized with the latest 10nm FinFET process technology, combined with continuous enhancements in power management and system IP, ARM's high-end IP modules are designed for system-wide energy efficiency and performance.

The recently announced CoreLink CCI-550 achieves full consistency across the SoC, speeding up GPU computing and improving the energy efficiency of big.LITTLE technology. Energy Aware Scheduling (EAS) provides more control and flexibility for energy efficiency and performance management of the entire system OS.

The Mali-G71 and Cortex-A73 are fully compatible with ARM's newly acquired AsserTIve CameraTM, AsserTIve Display® and SpiritTM imaging technologies, further enhancing the user experience for mobile VR/AR applications.
