Singapore government HDB is gradually switching to energy-saving LED lights. By the end of this year, the public space of 1,848 housing estates in 11 towns across the island will be replaced with energy-saving LED lights. The estimated replacement size is 330,000. Compared with fluorescent lamps, LED lamps have a lifespan of about 50,000 hours, five times that of fluorescent lamps. More importantly, LED lamps of the same brightness will save up to 60% of the electricity, which will save the government's electricity bills and reduce the carbon emissions by up to 10,000 metric tons per year, equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by about 48,000 trees. This move makes Singapore another important step towards the goal of a low carbon city.
