In-depth study of the needs of each link in the industry chain

At present, the main business of Philips Lumileds is concentrated in three major blocks, one is the automobile market (external lamps, such as taillights, headlights, etc.), the second is mobile phones (such as photo flash), and the third is the lighting market (including indoor, outdoor, industrial, Business and other different application directions). “But to win market recognition and user recognition, we must understand the user needs of each link,” said Mr. Danny Yu.

Philips Lumileds analyzes user needs from both technical and application perspectives. From a technical perspective, it analyzes user needs in the vertical mode of the industry chain, from upstream chips and packages to application vendors; from an application perspective, it is divided into cars, mobile phones and lighting. Danny Yu pointed out that cars and mobile phones are currently relatively mature markets and are the traditional strong areas of Philips Lumileds. However, the company's strategic focus has shifted to the field of focusing lighting. For lighting, it is divided into indoor lighting and outdoor lighting. Multiple areas.

“Philips Lumileds' research on each link is very deep,” says Danny Yu. In the case of LED street lights, the marketing department needs to conduct research and analysis from the municipal department to the design company, to the OEM supplier and then to the component supplier. In addition, the needs of users in different regions should also be analyzed. For example, in the choice of color temperature, the Asian office lighting market tends to choose 4000-4500k products, while European and American users prefer 3500-4000k products, different users, different regions and different applications. The needs of the field are different. It is necessary to understand the actual needs of each link in order to be targeted and win the market.

The role of Philips Lumileds' strategic marketing department is to study the application needs of the next 3-5 years, as well as those applications that have never been seen before, while integrating the current and future technological achievements of the R&D department. “Only the combination of market and technology can lead to new applications and business opportunities,” said Danny Yu.

LED enters the challenge of home lighting: price is the primary

At present, LED has begun to replace some traditional lighting markets, such as halogen lamps. "But the amount of home lighting is still small, and it is still in the early stage of development. At present, the primary problem facing LEDs into home lighting is price."

Danny Yu pointed out that the current home lighting market is still a price-oriented market, which is very sensitive to product prices. Although the overall cost of LED lighting products is far superior to traditional light sources in the long run, the current high initial cost is still general consumption. The biggest obstacle to choosing LED lights.

In addition to price issues, government policies are also an important consideration for the popularity of LED lighting. “If there is policy support or financial subsidies, I believe that the popularity of LEDs will be faster, on the contrary, it will be slower.”

The promotion of the policy will accelerate the maturity of the LED lighting market: In the US market, for example, the United States set higher lighting energy efficiency standards in February 2009 and required all public buildings to be replaced with energy-saving light bulbs (2007 US energy-saving lamps 290 million) , accounting for 20% of the bulb market). After President Obama took office, he actively promoted an environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient energy policy. In China, the Ministry of Finance and the National Development and Reform Commission jointly issued the Interim Measures for the Administration of Financial Subsidy Funds for Efficient Lighting Products Promotion last year. The state adopted indirect subsidies to promote high-efficiency lighting products.

"Lower cost reduction and government policy support are two key factors that can quickly enter the home lighting market," Danny Yu pointed out, but LED lighting will be the trend of the times, but it is only a matter of time.

150lm/W is not the target

With the improvement of LED technology, the luminous efficiency of LED has also reached new highs. Some people in the industry believe that if LEDs are to be cut into the main lighting source market of indoor lighting, the target luminous efficiency of mass production should reach 150lm/W, and various manufacturers also Actively strive towards the goal of 150lm/W.

“Indoor lighting does not require 150lm/w LEDs,” said Danny Yu.

“When developing a new product, you should pay attention to the overall lighting effect, including color temperature, color rendering index, etc., not just considering a certain parameter.” He believes that outdoor lighting may require 150lm/w (cold white light) LEDs. Indoor lighting 80-90lm/w LED (warm white light) is enough.

Because the direction of the LED is very good, the LED lamp is more efficient. Traditional halogen/incandescent lamps waste up the upward light and some become heat, so the efficiency is very low and not very energy efficient. “While the price of LED lamps is high, considering the significant energy saving effect in the later period and long life, the overall cost is still superior to traditional light sources.”

Danny Yu pointed out that the first user to apply LED lighting should be a commercial user. Because commercial users have long lighting time, considering the energy saving effect in the later stage, the willingness to accept LED lights is much stronger than that of home users. “The current commercial progress is fast, and home promotion is relatively fast. SLOW."

In the future, the focus of LED lamp development is quality. Only high-quality products can win consumer recognition. At present, there are a large number of low-quality LED lamps on the market. The quality of each manufacturer's products is uneven, very chaotic, and the market urgently needs high quality. Products and standards. “We expect a number of high quality LED lights to appear within one to two years.”

Phosphor conversion LED is still the mainstream

The use of color LEDs is inaccessible to the general lighting market because they do not emit white light. In order to obtain white light for general illumination, a particular spectrum must be converted to white light or multiple spectra mixed into white light. At present, LED white light is mainly obtained by two methods: 1) phosphor technology; 2) multi-color mixing. Of course, there are also white LEDs that use both phosphor and multi-color mixing technology.

"Currently, phosphor-converted white LED technology is the mainstream technology," and most manufacturers in the industry use this technology.

Philips Lumileds' phosphor technology not only converts white light, but also converts yellow light. Philips Lumileds has introduced the highly practical LUXEON Rebel phosphor-converted amber (PC Amber) new LUXEON Rebel for color stability and light output. The performance standard, its light output is 2 to 5 times that of a typical amber LED, greatly reducing light fade and color drift. When the drive current is 350mA, the LUXEON Rebel PC amber LED has an average luminous flux of 70lm.

“The reduction in phosphor conversion is low and the cost is low, and our products are still at a very high level with increasing temperatures,” Danny Yu pointed out.

Multi-color mixing is more costly than phosphor conversion, and color drift may become more severe over time. Another disadvantage is the increased complexity of the device, which requires multi-chip packaging. And complex optics. Color control compensation feedback circuits are also needed to control discrete LED chips with different degradation and thermal characteristics.

Focus on the overall performance of the product

"We believe that the focus of follow-up development on the chip is improvement in light efficiency, while the focus of packaging LEDs is on overall quality and performance." Includes more emphasis on correlated color temperature (CCT), color rendering index (CRI) and efficiency. These factors have become the key indicators to determine product quality, energy efficiency and reliability.

Following the launch of amber (PC amber) LED products some time ago, Philips Lumileds has recently developed new products for lighting applications. The LUXEON® Rebel series has introduced nine new LED products specifically for embedded lighting, street lighting and high-brightness bulbs. A wide range of lighting applications, optimized for specific color temperature and color rendering combinations, and meets lighting standards such as ENERGY STAR®. Breakthrough technology in the latest LUXEON Rebel LEDs increases its thermal coefficient to 0.93 (typically 0.80-0.85), providing higher light output and performance than almost any other power LED. The nine new products are graded according to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards and meet their stringent color temperature requirements and color rendering index. Superior performance makes these new LEDs the first to meet ENERGY STAR® certification requirements and similar requirements for a variety of lighting applications.

“We are very pleased to be able to directly influence our customers' needs for LUXEON Rebel through a highly targeted combination of color temperature, color rendering index and lumen output, and these products certified by ENERGY STAR and other industry standards can also help our customers save systems. The cost and time of design accelerates R&D and product launches, helping us expand our business in the solid-state lighting market. This is the first LUXEON Rebel LED product line we have developed specifically for the lighting market. We plan to meet customer needs. Continue to develop new products. We are constantly striving to provide the high quality, high consistency and reliability of LUXEON® high power LEDs that our customers expect."
