Kionix, a subsidiary of the ROHM Group, recently shared insights into its range of accelerometers, highlighting their manufacturing processes and key features. The company offers a wide array of products, including cost-effective models, high-performance units, ultra-thin sensors, and intelligent accelerometer/sensor hubs. As sensor integration continues to evolve, Kionix has developed dual-function sensors such as acceleration-geomagnetic and acceleration-gyroscope combinations. These products stand out in the market, with Kionix's six-axis accelerometer-gyro sensor being one of the most competitive in terms of performance and power efficiency. According to Zhang Wei, the representative from Kionix, the success of any sensor solution heavily relies on the underlying algorithms, which significantly impact overall performance.
Kionix chips are widely used across major mobile phone brands. Although not as well-known as some competitors, Kionix is a leading manufacturer in consumer MEMS motion sensors. Most top manufacturers in this space have their own MEMS fabrication facilities, which dominate around 90% of China’s market. However, Kionix takes a different approach, focusing on broad customer accessibility, especially in the mobile sector. Between 2014 and 2015, the company shipped over 100 million accelerometers annually, holding a market share of 20–30%.
Most of Kionix’s shipments go into consumer electronics, where the return on investment is more immediate compared to industrial or automotive markets. While those sectors offer higher profit margins, they also require significant initial investment and longer development cycles. Therefore, Kionix concentrates on non-safety-critical applications like car keys and infotainment systems.
In terms of manufacturing, Kionix designs both the MEMS measurement unit and the ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit). The MEMS part, which is crucial for accurate sensing, is produced in-house at two dedicated facilities: one in New York and another in Rome, Japan. The ASIC is then manufactured by trusted partners and combined with the MEMS unit at a packaging facility. Finally, Kionix conducts rigorous testing on each chip to ensure quality and reliability, leveraging top-tier industry partners for production and packaging.
Kionix has a diverse product lineup, including the KXR94/KXD94 for automotive and industrial use, and the KX03/04 currently in development. The ultra-thin KXCJB is a new addition, ideal for compact devices. The KXTJ3, a low-cost and energy-efficient model, is set to replace older series that saw annual shipments of 100 million units. Functional products like the KX112, KX122, and KX124 feature advanced FIFO buffers and support for 12 tap detection methods. The latest KX222/KX224 supports up to ±32g shock detection, making it the first consumer-grade sensor to reach this level, with Finnish software support for optimized performance.
Other notable products include the KX123, which is undergoing vehicle certification, and the KXG07/08, designed for pin compatibility and lower power consumption. Kionix continues to innovate, ensuring its products meet the evolving needs of the consumer and industrial markets.
