RF inductors play a crucial role in high-frequency analog circuits and signal processing, finding applications in technologies such as cell phones, RFID systems, test equipment, GPS devices, radar, Wi-Fi, and satellite radio. These components are essential for tasks like circuit tuning, impedance matching, and creating high-pass or low-pass filters. Applications of RF Inductors

RF inductors are found in a wide range of everyday devices. Maria del Mar Villarrubia, a development engineer at PREMO, explained, “In order to track animals, there is an inductance inside the glass tube implanted in the skin of our domestic animals.” She added, “Every time you start your car, you have two inductors—there’s wireless communication between the car and the key.”

Despite their widespread use, RF inductors serve very specific purposes. In resonant circuits, they are typically paired with capacitors to select a particular frequency, such as in oscillators or voltage-controlled oscillators. They are also used in impedance matching to ensure efficient signal transfer between integrated circuits.

When used as an RF choke, the inductor acts as a low-pass filter, blocking higher frequencies while allowing lower ones to pass. This makes them valuable in noise suppression and power supply filtering.

Understanding the Q Factor

The Q factor is one of the most important performance metrics for inductors. It measures how efficiently an inductor stores energy relative to the energy it loses. A higher Q value means the inductor behaves more like an ideal, lossless component, offering better selectivity in resonant circuits.

Deryl J. Kimbro, a senior product manager at Murata, explained, “A higher Q value means the inductor performs closer to an ideal inductor, which improves its ability to select specific frequencies in a circuit.” He added that high-Q inductors also have lower losses, resulting in less energy consumption and better performance at resonance.

Inductance Value

While the Q factor is important, the actual inductance value is equally critical. For audio and power applications, inductors often have values in the range of several henries. However, in high-frequency applications, smaller values—such as millihenries or microhenries—are more common.

The inductance value depends on factors like coil geometry, core material, and the number of turns. Some inductors have fixed values, while others can be adjusted to suit different circuit requirements.

Other Key Specifications

Beyond inductance and Q factor, other specifications like DC resistance (DCR), rated current, and self-resonant frequency (SRF) are also important. These parameters influence the inductor's performance under different operating conditions.

Del Mar Villarrubia noted, “Depending on the application, certain features may take precedence. For example, in tire pressure monitoring systems, temperature stability is crucial, which affects the choice of core material.”

Rated Current

It’s essential to ensure that the operating current remains below the rated current specified for the inductor. Exceeding this limit can cause overheating or damage to the component.

DC Resistance (DCR)

DCR is closely related to the rated current and represents the internal resistance of the inductor. A lower DCR means less energy loss and better current handling. Increasing the wire diameter in the winding reduces DCR and improves performance.

Doug Lillie, a product marketing manager at Vishay, said, “DCR limits how much DC current the device can handle without overheating or saturating, which can cause a sharp drop in inductance.”

Self-Resonant Frequency (SRF)

Each inductor has a self-resonant frequency, where the inductive and capacitive effects cancel out, making the inductor behave like a resistor. Above this frequency, the capacitive reactance dominates, reducing the inductor’s effectiveness.

Lillie explained, “At SRF, the inductor no longer functions as a pure inductor. Instead, it starts acting more like a capacitor, which can impact circuit performance if not accounted for.”
