ELMOS launches gesture recognition chip

21ic News ELMOS Semiconductors (ELMOS) has announced the launch of a non-contact photoelectric sensor chip E527.16 for gesture recognition. The chip is based on the basic working principle of HALIOS®: an LED tube emits modulated infrared light. When these infrared light encounters an object, part of it is reflected back and converted into an electrical signal by the photocell in the system. At the same time, another LED tube simultaneously emits infrared light of the same amplitude but 180° out of phase. During normal operation, it is ensured that signals with the same amplitude and opposite phase are received on the photocell, ensuring that the output signal of this part of the circuit is always zero. The biggest feature of the optical system designed with this principle is that it can withstand the strong external ambient light interference, and the performance is not affected by temperature and light changes.

The chip can recognize various gestures such as approaching, flapping, and fast swinging. Through the recognition of these actions, various types of working states can be output, and the detecting distance can reach 25 cm. Gestures that can be recognized within the effective detection range include: trigger gestures, objects (such as: hands) enter the effective detection area of the system; tap gestures, rapid back and forth movement in the vertical direction, simulate a virtual switching action; time selection, The gesture stays for a certain period of time; wiping, sliding, and waving the gesture at a certain speed in the horizontal direction; approaching the gesture, slowly approaching or moving away from the sensor at a certain speed. In addition, the working states that can be output include: on and off, the lamps are all on or off; dimming, the brightness of the lamps is adjustable from 0% to 100%, and the step size is 0.4%. At the same time, the user is notified by changing the brightness of the luminaire that the system has recognized a certain gesture.

The chip has an HMI human-machine dialogue interface. The chip integrates the most basic gesture recognition and lighting dimming control functions. The user does not need to add additional microcontrollers and complicated software work. It is a complete function gesture recognition solution. It is suitable for all types of lighting applications, and can also be widely used in a variety of non-contact gesture sensing products such as switches, object detection, and dimming. In addition, the gesture recognition solution also reserves a certain space for the user, and can carry out some personalized design and optimization according to actual needs.
