American students invent a new type of LED illumination method with gradient refractive index structure

Ma Ming, a Ph.D. student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, USA, won a $30,000 grant to develop a new way to make LEDs – changing the design of the diode surface. The new way can generate more light, reduce the impact on the environment and the overall cost.
Each of the modified LEDs can be illuminated to 70%, and most of the LEDs on the market only emit 25% by creating thousands of tiny star-shaped pillars on the LED surface. These stars are made up of 5 nanometer layers. Specially designed to help disperse the glow lines. Ma Ming called this nanostructure a "gradient refractive index (GRIN) structure."
Ma Ming said: "LED lamps are more efficient than traditional light sources, but their efficiency is not high compared to their theoretical limits. If you can increase the light output, it will effectively improve efficiency."
