LED lighting "recall" case frequently issued LED industry urgently to solve quality problems

In recent years, LED lamps with energy saving, environmental protection and longer service life have gradually replaced traditional lamps, and the market share has been rising. China has also become the world's largest producer of lighting products. According to the statistics of the High-tech Research Institute LED Research Institute (GGII), in 2017, China's LED lighting was close to 22 billion US dollars, an increase of nearly 40%.

In 2017, the status of China's first export destination for LED lighting products was further strengthened, and its proportion increased to 25.3%. The imports of LED lighting in Brazil and India increased by nearly 157% and 49% respectively, becoming the top ten export destinations for LED lighting in China. In addition, South America, the Middle East, Vietnam and other regions have become the fastest growing regions and countries for LED lighting exports.

However, as the export volume of LED lighting products in China continues to increase, some product quality issues are also worrying.

In the past two years, many LED export products have been caught in the "recall" quagmire due to quality problems, and have become a major pain point for LED export enterprises. Although LED companies have tightened their control over the quality of their export products, there have been many cases of recalls.

According to Gaogong LED observation, since the entry into 2018, there have been many cases of recalls in less than three months. Details are as follows:

Light string exported to Slovenia was recalled

In January 2018, the European Commission's Non-Food Rapid Alert System (RAPEX) recalled Chinese-made light strings. The notified country for this case is Slovenia.

The product is priced at 78 million (electrical appliances) in the OECD Portal Category. Reason for recall: The wire is easily broken, which is likely to cause electric shock and the product does not comply with the requirements of the Low Voltage Directive and EN 60598.

Domestic LED lamps exported to Finland were recalled

In January 2018, the European Commission's non-food rapid alert system (RAPEX) recalled Chinese-made LED lamps. The notified country of this case is Finland. The product is priced at 78 million (electrical appliances) in the OECD Portal Category.

Reasons for recall: The wire is easy to break, the insulation is poor, it is easy to cause electric shock, and the product does not meet the requirements of the low voltage directive and EN 62560.

3 Chinese-made LED lamps were recalled

In February 2018, the European Commission's non-food rapid warning system recalled three Chinese-made LED lamps. The electrical insulation between the live parts of the "ATOPSUN" brand lamps and the "GT Industrial" brand lamps and the accessible metal is insufficient, and the user is at risk of being shocked. Both products do not meet the requirements of the European Union Low Voltage Directive and the European related standard EN 60598.

Another "Party Lighting" brand of lamps contains short-chained chlorinated paraffins, which are teratogenic, pathogenic, and mutagenic. The test value is as high as 1.1% and does not meet the requirements of the European Union's Persistent Organic Pollutants Regulations.

Portable LED lights exported to Hungary were recalled

In February 2018, the European Commission's non-food rapid alert system (RAPEX) recalled Chinese-made portable LED lights under the brand name JH. The notified country of this case is Hungary. The product is priced at 78 million (electrical appliances) in the OECD Portal Category.

Reason for recall: The cross-sectional area of the inner and outer cores of the wire is too small, the lamp cover is easy to disassemble during charging, the socket socket and the plug are not sufficiently sized, the wires may overheat, and the low voltage directive and the European standard EN 60598 are not met.

LED ceiling light exported to Sweden was recalled

In March 2018, the European Commission's non-food rapid alert system (RAPEX) recalled the Chinese-made LED ceiling light. The notified country was Sweden and the brand was OEDGroup Limited. The product in the OECD Portal Category (OECDPortalCategory) is 78000000 (electrical).

Reason for recall: Poor insulation, the user may get an electric shock when replacing the light source, and the product does not meet the requirements of the low voltage directive and EN60598.

A domestic searchlight exported to France was recalled

In March 2018, the European Commission's non-food rapid alert system (RAPEX) recalled Chinese-made searchlights. The notified country was France and the brand was CEBA. The product in the OECD Portal Category is 78 million (electrical).

Reason for recall: Insufficient resistance to humidity, water may penetrate into the product, causing the user to be at risk of electric shock, and the product does not comply with the requirements of the Low Voltage Directive and EN60598.

A domestic searchlight exported to Spain was recalled

In March 2018, the European Commission's non-food rapid alert system (RAPEX) recalled Chinese-made searchlights. The notified country was Spain and the brand was LUZEUROPA. The product in the OECD Portal Category (OECDPortalCategory) is 78000000 (electrical).

Reason for recall: The cable is too thin and the product does not comply with the requirements of the Low Voltage Directive and EN60598.

Domestic light string exported to Latvia was recalled

In March 2018, the European Commission's non-food rapid alert system (RAPEX) recalled Chinese-made light strings. The notified country was Latvia under the brand MULTI FUNCTION. The product in the OECD Portal Category (OECDPortalCategory) is 78000000 (electrical).

Reason for recall: The cable is not properly designed and manufactured, may fall off, resulting in easy electric shock, and the product does not meet the requirements of the low voltage directive and EN60598.

For the recall of LED lamps, experts from Jiangsu Inspection and Quarantine Bureau said that although China's LED lamps have developed rapidly, they have formed a large industrial scale and have huge market potential, but the shortcomings of core and key technologies are lacking, scattered, small and chaotic. The industrial organization pattern still restricts the improvement of international competitiveness.

Experts also pointed out that through the recent analysis of the case of China's LED lamps recalled by European and American countries, the main reason is nothing more than the following four aspects of quality issues:

First, the waterproof performance of the product is not up to standard, and it is easy to get wet, resulting in internal damage of the lamp. Such products are mainly found in outdoor LED lamps;

Second, the product protection against electric shock does not meet the standard requirements. The main reason is that some manufacturers have defects in design, there are hidden dangers in the structure, and poor insulation of the cable may also cause fire;

Third, there are quality risks in the internal wiring and external wiring of the product, which may cause dangers such as electric shock, fire, falling and bruising, and endanger the personal and property safety of consumers;

Fourth, the products contain toxic and hazardous substances, which do not meet the requirements of relevant foreign laws and regulations.

Therefore, LED export enterprises should keep abreast of the standards of LED lighting products developed in Europe and the United States, and improve product quality from product design, raw material procurement, assembly and production.
