On January 18th, NetEase Smart News reported that Google has made another move into the Chinese market. Just a month after announcing plans to open its first personal smart lab in Beijing, the tech giant has now set up an office in Shenzhen.

A recent internal email obtained by TechCrunch revealed that Google has rented office space in Shenzhen, a city known as a global hardware hub located just across from Hong Kong. The new location isn't a full-scale campus, but rather a serviced office that became operational this week.

A Google spokesperson confirmed the news to TechCrunch, stating, “We have many important customers and partners in Shenzhen. We’re here to build offices to better communicate and collaborate with them.”

Here's a short message sent by Google to its employees:

“Hello everyone from Google China, I hope you all have a great 2018! I’m excited to announce that we’ve opened a new office in Shenzhen. As you know, we have many Google employees in China who often travel to Shenzhen. We received a lot of feedback saying that a local office would be beneficial. After several months of research, we recently rented a serviced office in Shenzhen. It’s now open and fully operational. We hope it will provide a more comfortable environment for our team members in the area.”

Shenzhen is home to major tech companies like Tencent, Huawei, ZTE, Alibaba, and Baidu. It’s also a hotspot for startups, including HAX, a global hardware accelerator. With such a vibrant ecosystem, it makes sense for Google to establish a presence there.

Google’s upcoming artificial intelligence lab in China is expected to tap into the country’s growing pool of AI talent. This could signal a strategic shift toward focusing more on the Chinese market. In addition, Google recently relaunched its “Google Translate” app in China, which many saw as a sign of the company’s renewed interest in the region.

The Shenzhen office is likely to serve teams that have been heavily involved in the region. Google believes that having a dedicated workspace improves productivity compared to working in hotels or public areas. The sales, hardware, logistics, procurement, and supply teams in China are expected to use the office most frequently.

In the future, Google may expand further and add more elements of its brand identity to the space. However, at this stage, the focus remains on providing a functional and efficient work environment.

Google’s recent $1.1 billion acquisition of a significant portion of HTC’s smartphone business highlights its growing interest in hardware. The Shenzhen office reinforces this trend, showing that the company is strengthening its hardware operations in the Chinese market.

A report from The Information noted that the number of engineers in Google’s hardware department in Shanghai has grown from 20 people last year to over 100 today.

HAX General Partner Benjamin Joffe told TechCrunch, “I hope Google can develop more smart products like the Home series in Shenzhen. I also expect more people to consider traveling to Shenzhen for Google events, especially during CES. With their expanding product line, Google is likely to follow in the footsteps of Apple and Amazon, drawing more people to work and live in Nanshan District or Futian District.”
