JOLED inkjet process 21.6 inch 4K OLED display panel began commercial shipment

In June 2017, JOLED announced the start of production of 21.6-inch 4K OLED panels and plans to begin small-scale production of its 4.5-generation inkjet production line. On the 5th of this month, JOLED announced that it has started the commercialization of these panels. It is speculated that the company’s first customer may be Sony. JOLED said that it has already achieved the necessary quality and output. The product has been selected for the production of medical displays (accordingly, it is presumed to be Sony, because it received the first samples of JOLED, and already has a 25-inch OLED medical display using its own OLED screen). JOLED also plans to extend the panel to other OLED display applications. JOLED's first OLED panel is 21.6 inches with a resolution of 3840×2160 (4K, 204PPI) and a brightness of 350cd/m2. The overall thickness of the panel is only 1.3mm and weighs only 500g. Japan Display recently decided to stop its plan to convert a minority stake in JOLED to a majority stake, so JOLED is currently raising $900 million to support its plan to mass produce OLEDs at the JDI plant in Nomi, Ishikawa, in 2019. The plant is currently used to make LCDs, but it will be closed at the end of 2017. JOLED (Japan OLED) was established by Japan Display, Sony, and Panasonic in August 2014 under the funding of the INCJ Investment Fund. JOLED is using an ink jet printing process that can achieve lower production costs, which is about 30% to 50% lower than the evaporation process. JOLED is using Sumitomo's P-OLED material.
