Magnificent architecture - unlimited attraction

Westpac Bank (Australia)'s new headquarters building is impressive in many respects, and its functional applications are particularly impressive. The building's lighting control uses the world's largest DALI lighting control system, which creates a high degree of lighting comfort, operational flexibility and energy savings.

Founded in 1817, Westpac Bank was once known as the “New South Wales Bank”. In recent years, it has been awarded the honorary medal of the “Best Service Bank”. The bank has branches around the world and employs more than 27,000 people.

Futuristic design

Located in Sydney, Westpac Place is the headquarters of the Westpac Bank Group, located between Kent, Erskine, Napoleon Street and Sussex Street.

The 35-story building was designed by Johnson Pilton Walker and the interior was designed by Geyer Design and Hassell. The developer is Leighton Properties and was built by Leighton Contractors.

From Westpac Place, Sydney’s financial & business centre and Darling Harbour offer unobstructed views. The building consists of two glass towers and a three-story podium. The north facing glass facade wall is magnificent and attracts countless visitors. In addition, the giant real-time barometer at its top is clearly visible a few miles away, another highlight of the building.

In September 2006, Westpac Bank officially stayed. The building covers an area of over 74,000 square meters and can accommodate more than 5,000 employees. As the sole tenant of the building, the “Westpac” image runs through the building. For example, the main staircase, which is part of an interior building, gives a “coherent” and “smooth” feel.

winDIM@net leads success

Obviously, excellent lighting is very important to create a good "commercial atmosphere" because it creates a comfortable atmosphere and stimulates people's pleasure. The lighting design should not only meet certain explicit requirements of the user (such as controlling a particular light source or group of light sources) but also be outstanding in terms of energy efficiency. Equally important is how to achieve a relative balance between functionality and aesthetics. Intelligent lighting control systems seamlessly combine all of these standards to minimize investment and reduce operating costs.

Focus on the future

The well-known Australian electrical engineer and lighting consultant Webb team is responsible for the electrical system engineering of the main building and the auxiliary building. The Webb team led by Fred Bowers provides design, material certification, and commissioning and operation of all electrical equipment. This includes the communication performance and safety performance of electrical equipment.

Vessi Ivanova is a senior lighting engineer on the Webb team responsible for the lighting design of the main and auxiliary buildings of the building. He refers to several important parameters of building energy efficiency, and considers the customer's requirements for large-scale control of lighting equipment. The DALI basic lighting control system is the best solution to meet these requirements.

However, although the traditional DALI system is limited by a 64-bit address per bus, we connect a total of 35,000 lights together in an intelligent networked way. Tridonic's lighting engineering software winDIM @net is easy to operate and powerful, so it is well qualified for this type of work. In addition, the system is easy to start and install. During the installation and operation process, Tridonic also provides a large amount of technical support and professional training.

The winDIM @net system is installed and configurable by CTI Technology Integration, a partner of Australia's Tridonic. It contains two independent lighting control systems, each with its own separate server and Ethernet connector. One is responsible for lighting control at the Westpac office and the other is responsible for lighting control in the commercial area. The lighting control system can be operated according to specific requirements. For example, for lighting in densely populated areas or for space lighting for meetings, training, and reception of customers, the system is designed to maximize flexibility and create different lighting environments to meet different needs. Lighting in public walkways and other work areas is dominated by reduced operating costs.

We have installed a total of 286 DALI buses. The DALI bus and Ethernet gateway allow the lighting of each floor to be connected to a higher level control system so that we can centrally operate and monitor all lighting systems.

winDIM @net is also a networked audiovisual system. The transmission of the DALI bus controls the brightness of the skylight and the brightness of the screen and can cause a reduction in the illuminance value or through a programmed illumination sensor to perform different tasks, such as a speech or conference.

Advanced lighting control

The winDIM@net lighting control system applies many of DALI's functions to central management (including control, monitoring, evaluation, etc.). The central management of winDIM@net is especially suitable for composite buildings like Westpac Place. Through the control device we can regain information about all situations, such as lamp start failure, current reduction value and hardware factor failure. This will greatly simplify maintenance.

The winDIM@net software ensures that Tridonic's diverse DALI infrastructures work flawlessly together. There are 20,500 dimmable PCA EXCEL one4all, PCA ECO and PC PRO with fixed output ECGs. In addition, there are 8,000 TE four-in-one electronic transformers for low-voltage metal halide lamps, a large number of DALI relays and other control devices from the company.

Energy efficiency guarantee

The winDIM @net lighting control system not only provides a convenient lighting environment and impressive flexibility, it also provides a basic energy efficiency guarantee for the operation of the lighting system. In order to ensure that the specified illuminance value is achieved even at the end of the life of the lamp, these lamps operate at the initial dimming value of 75%. Considering that the dimming value will always increase during maintenance, all the lights in the office are lit at the same level. The intelligent illumination adjustment device can save up to 18% energy consumption.

At the end of each working day, energy can be saved by controlling the lighting system to reduce brightness. But at the same time, you must choose the appropriate level of illumination to ensure the safety of the room and the corridor.

The benefits of the winDIM@net lighting control system and the single-lamp configurable address and single-lamp feedback left a deep impression on the owners, users and equipment managers. These benefits include: maneuverability, simple measurability, construction, stand-alone control, energy measurement, fault feedback, and more. They bring great convenience to the discovery and troubleshooting of faults. All of the above not only shows that the winDIM @net lighting control system has good reliability and it also reduces maintenance and operating costs.

milestone

The lighting of the top glass tower at Westpac Place is made up of white light and eight contrasting red bands. The change of the barometer with atmospheric pressure is represented by the change of the red band of the south and north LEDs. Each LED tube band represents an atmospheric pressure of 5 hPa, which ranges from 990 hPa to 1025 hPa.

There are 624 1W LED lights below each barometer slot. They are equipped with reflectors for wide and medium width beams to provide a viewing angle of 40 degrees. We use sensors to measure the amount of natural light. The winDIM @net lighting control system uses the measured values to control the illumination of the glass space and the LED column.

Although Westpac Place's architecture itself is complex, Tridonic's winDIM @net lighting control system and intelligent controls have made a significant contribution to the success of the DALI solution.
